VEHICLE INSURANCE

If you are involved in an accident while driving a Tulane vehicle, you must complete a Damage to Tulane Vehicles/Equipment form and forward it to Risk Management as soon as possible.

  • 1. Damage to Tulane owned Vehicles
  • The University's insurance policy covers damage to Tulane owned vehicles caused by all perils including collision, vandalism, theft, and fire. The deductible is $500 and is the responsibility of the department suffering the loss.

If damage to a University owned vehicle is the fault of a third party, Risk Management will attempt to recover money from the at-fault driver's insurance company and reimburse the appropriate department for the loss. If you do not report the accident to Risk management, all repairs will be charged to your department account.

  • 2. Auto Liability
  • This insurance coverage protects Tulane against bodily injury and property damage claims of a third party if damage or injury is caused by negligence on the part of Tulane or its employees while operating a motor vehicle in the scope of their employment at the University.

  • 3. Personal Vehicles Used for Official University Business
  • In Louisiana, insurance carried on a vehicle by the owner is the primary coverage. Therefore, the employee's personal vehicle insurance would apply in the event of an accident, even if the vehicle is used for official Tulane University business. Many insurance policies exclude work related activities from coverage. Therefore, it is important that any employee using his/her personal vehicle in the scope of work check with his/her insurance agent to confirm coverage.

University policy states that "use of a personal automobile for official University business will be reimbursed at the standard mileage rate published annually by the University. The rate is currently thirty-four and one-half (36.5ý) cents per mile for each mile traveled in a privately owned vehicle. The rate is intended to cover all costs associated with owning the automobile, including gasoline, maintenance and repairs, insurance, etc.... Mileage reimbursement may be allowed for the use of a personal automobile while on University business within the local area, excluding mileage normally associate with commuting from the residence to the place of employment...."

  • 4. Rental and Lease Vehicles
  • Under construction
