Members of the extended Tulane LAMP and GAELA family are mourning the death of Jannie Price, who lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005.  As anyone who worked with Jannie or participated in these programs knows, she dedicated her professional life to increasing educational opportunities and achievement for minorities.  Jannie was the heart and soul of the LAMP and GAELA programs.  The Tulane LAMP program has served hundreds of undergraduates from institutions across Louisiana and has enjoyed very high success placing participants in science and engineering graduate programs (nearly 50%).  The GAELA project is realizing similar success advancing minorities to science and engineering doctoral degrees and careers in the professoriate.  However, numbers of students impacted alone does not do justice to Jannie's legacy.  She cared for each and every student she worked with and committed herself to  their success.  She transformed all of them in ways that made them expect greater things of themselves, and to reach out and help others.

Jannie's dedication to improving the lives of minorities extended beyond the sciences and engineering.  As a Tulane Alum (B.A., Sociology '95), she understood about the experiences of minorities in a majority educational setting  (BA, 1995).  She was active in the Tulane Black Alumni organization.  She worked with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Undergraduate Admissions to help orient incoming minority freshmen to the Tulane campus.  At the time of her death, she was nearing completion of a Master's degree in Social Work.  She was working with students in New Orleans area middle schools. The degree will be awarded at Spring 2005 Commencement.

We are working to establish a memorial scholarship fund in Jannie's honor.  Details about the fund and scholarship will be posted at this site.  If you would like to contribute, please let us know.
