New Orleans Map Exercise |

An understanding of New Orleans' hurricane history, the Katrina disaster, and the future of New Orleans, depends on being well acquainted with geographic features such as water features (like lakes, canals, and bayous), topographic features (mainly ridges), and place names. This exercise should help you become acquainted with these important features. The exercise involves finding these features on maps. In particular you will download two maps that are in the following Microsoft Powerpoint file - NewOrleansMapExercise.ppt. They are labeled as Map 1 and Map 2. Maps at two different scales are required in order to show all the features. You are then to use Microsoft powerpoint to label the locations of each of the features asked for on each map (listed below). You can use any source to find the features. The library has a map section that you could use, but you should also be able to find all locations and plot them on your maps using the internet. If you have Google Earth installed on your computer, that would be a good place to start. Other sites, like Yahoo Maps or Google Maps should also be helpful. Note also that there are maps in some of the assigned reading material that will give you clues to locations. You will likely need to look at more than one source to complete the assignment. If you have trouble finding a feature, don't be afraid to send an email to request a hint. Try to make a neat map with no overlapping text. In many cases it will be necessary to type in a label then draw an arrow pointing to the feature (using the drawing tools in Powerpoint). In other cases, it may be necessary to draw in the boundaries of the feature and either put the label inside the boundary or, if it won't fit inside, put the label outside and draw an arrow. Try to choose a font size and style that is readable without having to use magnification. You may want to use different size fonts for larger features and smaller features. Again try to make things as neat as possible. After you download the Powerpoint file rename it with your own name somehow occurring in the filename. When you are done, turn in the assignment by sending the file to the instructor by email. You should be able to find all 50 features listed below (some are duplicates and plot on both maps). You will be awarded 1 point for successfully locating and labeling each feature on the maps for a total of 50 points. Another 10 possible points will be awarded for neatness. Again, this is not a test, so don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
