LA DOTD Bridge Rating Section is responsible for managing, evaluating and continuous monitoring of all existing bridges on the state system. This work includes load rating, load posting and super load permit reviewing as prescribed by Federal Law. Louisiana’s bridge network includes complex structures, such as truss spans, girder spans, movables spans, concrete spans, and timber spans. Louisiana even owns a Mississippi River Crossing that carries both motor vehicles and rail. The Bridge Rating Section functions as part of facility management program based on the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation and Load and Resistance Factor Rating. Other references employed include LADOTD Bridge Design Manual, and LADOTD EDMS (Engineering Directives and Standards Manual).
