Presentation Topic : Clean Energy Using Integrated Gasification and Combine Cycle Technology with Coals, Biomass and Alternative Fuels.

By: Ting Wang

Summary :

Irrespective of the increased natural gas production in recent years, coals will continue to be the major energy source. With the expected accelerated use of natural gas and the limited natural gas reserves which are predicted to be depleted in forty years in the United States at the current expenditure rate, the importance of using coals can not be more apparent. Since coals are not clean, how to burn them cleanly with the minimum environmental impact is a critical subject to which we should pay special attention to and for which we should assume responsibility.

This presentation reviews and compares the current coal utilization technologies including (a) Coal Fired Pressurized Fluidized Combustion (PFBC) (b) Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) (c) Combined IGCC and Liquid Phase Methanol Process (d) Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell Combined Cycle (IGFCC) (e) Fuel Cell/Gas Turbine Hybrid Cycle using syngas. Advantages and disadvantages of each method will be assessed, along with the energy efficiency, emissions, and the impact of each method on environment.

In additional to clean coal technology, alternative fuels using biomass and petroleum coke will be discussed.
