Mr. Baker is the partner in charge of Structural and Civil Engineering for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). Since joining the firm in 1981, Mr. Baker has pursued a collaborative process that seeks to integrate structure and architecture into a unified, economical design. Throughout his career, Mr. Baker has been involved in a variety of innovations in building systems, including low-rise and high-rise buildings, long span roofs, and special structures. Mr. Baker and his structural team have developed systems that have created dynamic, exciting structures which are at once clean, distinct and economical.

"Burj Dubai – Tallest of the Tall"

When the Dubai Tower is completed in 2008, the world's tallest building and tallest structure will be of structural concrete. At more than 2000 feet high and with 4 million square feet of space, it will be visible for 60 miles. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Chicago, is the architect and engineer for the project. William F. Baker, Partner in SOM, will discuss the design and construction of this inspirational and record-breaking project.
