The Harriet Lane was a side-wheel steamer of 600 tons, armed with three 9-inch Dahlgrens, one 30-pounder Parrott Rifle, and one 12-pounder James Rifle. An armed revenue cutter, the Harriet Lane was named after President James Buchanan's niece.
