Welcome to the Tulane University Capoeira Angola Club Site.

Capoeira Angola is a martial art developed by enslaved Africans who were brought to Brazil. Combining dynamic movements such as cartwheels, handstands, spinning kicks and spontaneous acrobatics along with music, dance and ritual, Capoeira works on multiple levels as a martial art and a form of creative expression. For the African slaves who originally developed the art, Capoeira was used to teach not only fighting but also street smarts, environmental awareness and philosophy. Masked as a game in front of their enslavers, Capoeira was eventually outlawed until 1938 as Brazilian authorities came to realize the power contained within the practice.

Our goal as a club is to continue the traditional teachings of this martial art.
This involves learning Capoeira's movements, musical instruments and songs
