Treatment of Items
and Information in Voyager Item Records,
by Location

Please note:  If you have not consulted this document before, please read the introduction first.   It will help you to interpret the table of locations.

Introduction

1. Treatment of monographic items:  how, and in some cases whether, to:
   • Mark with call number and any special notation below call number.  If only the basic call number is written in the piece, the "Notation on item" column shows "none."

     For items in rare categories -- in which no call number, record numbers, or title-page markings should be written -- the "Notation on item" column shows "do not mark."  (Instead, mark information on routing slip or provide a printout of the bib record, underlining author, title, and call number in pencil.)

   • Barcode

   • Stamp with any special stamp

   • Bind:  In this column, "yes" means that a piece in that location is a possible candidate for binding -- based on current binding guidelines.  "No" means that pieces in that location are never bound.  For further details, see "To Bind or Not to Bind!:  Binding Policy for Non-Serial Items."

   • Shelve on special shelves in the Processing area

2. Information to put in the associated item record, including:
   • Item type

   • Item status -- if the same status applies to all items in this location.  If this column shows "varies" for a particular location:
     • Items not going to the bindery receive an item status of "Not Charged"

     • Items going to the bindery receive an item status of "At Bindery"

   • Barcode number

Please note:  The locations are listed by their informal name, the way that we refer to them in the Cataloging Dept. (e.g., "Rare").  This name may or may not match the formal Voyager name in staff displays (e.g., "JH Rare") or OPAC displays (e.g., "JONES HALL Rare Books").  If you need to know the Voyager staff name, check the MARC Holdings Record 852 ‡b location list.
