Judy Miao, MS
My name is Yi Jian Miao, but most people know me as Judy Miao. I was born in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to the United States when I was seven years old. My hometown now is Flushing, NY. I graduated in May of 1997 with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. I started working at the Muskoskeletal Research Center (MSRC) in 1997. The focus of my research is on the tissue engineering of articular cartilage.
Some of my hobbies include reading, listening to music and watching movies. I also like ice skating, as well as playing volleyball, tennis and racquetball. Another favorite pastime of mine is to spend time with friends and to just relax and enjoy time away from school and work.
Feel free to contact me at jmiao@pitt.edu.

Lance Brunton, BS
I am a Uniontown native who graduated summa cum laude from The University of Pennsylvania. As a Bioengineering Major, I was introduced to the biomechanics of soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage. That part of my education proved useful at the MSRC, where I was spending two summer working for the cartilage master Dr. J-K Suh. The summer before, I had received an undergraduate research grant from the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative. That year I was sponsored by Dr. Freddie Fu, and my project involved microencapsulation.
Most of my free time at Penn was spent as captian of the men's club soccer team and as an officer in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. My other interests include piano playing, weightlifting and reading creative nonfiction. In the October after working at the MSRC, I began a 10-month service program in AmeriCorps NCCC and will be stationed in Charleston, SC. Later, I hope to attend The University of Pittsburgh Medical School and pursue orthopaedic surgery.

I have enjoyed playing soccer for many years and continue to do so at the University of Virginia where I attended for the fourth year as a Biochemistry Major. The summer before that was my first at the MSRC, where I started in the ACL group and explored force probes. I switched to the Cartilage Group where I explored growth factors and various cell lines in a variety of media. I have lived in Pittsburgh all of my life and in Upper St. Clair for the vast majority, where I am the middle child. My older sister resides and works in Japan while my younger brother was set to started his first year at UNC in the fall of 1998.
