Key elements of the GAELA project include :

  • Supplementing first-year stipends for students enrolled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) doctoral programs at Tulane and LSU.  Application Procedures.
  • Providing travel funds for students enrolled in STEM doctoral programs at Tulane and LSU
  • Providing academic career training
  • Providing cultural, orientation and adaptation activities for graduate students
  • Hosting faculty mentoring workshops
  • Hosting annual recruitment conferences to increase diversity at Tulane and LSU
     
  • Providing additional funding to students in the writing stages of their doctoral program (up to $21,000) through the GAELA Dissertation Writing Fellowship. Application Procedures.
     
  • Other activities provided by the four Historical Black Colleges and Universities (Xavier, Dillard, Southern Universities at Baton Rouge and New Orleans) include:
      • summer bridge programs
      • undergraduate research
      • graduate school preparation and mentoring
      • graduate records examination (GRE) preparation
