The LS-LAMP Scholars Program is for Tulane University undergraduate students who are in good academic standing; have an interest or actively majoring in one of the sciences (physical or life), engineering, or mathematics; and interested in pursuing a career in science, engineering, or mathematics.
As
a LS-LAMP Scholar, you will have access to the following services:
Undergraduate Research
Peer Tutoring
• Academic Stipends
GRE Preparation
Group Enrollment in Introductory Science Courses
Graduate School Preparation
Travel/Research Grants
Scientific Conferences
Undergraduate Research: Students have an opportunity to participate in faculty-mentored research during the summer and academic year. The summer program is a ten week program that includes faculty-mentored research; training in graduate research methods, including library research, use of computers, scientific methods and experimental design; GRE preparation, and applying to graduate school; presentation of research results; field trips to research facilities; and social events.
Participants selected for the summer program will receive a stipend of $3,000 plus on-campus housing. Students selected for the academic year program will receive an hourly wage for up to 10 hours per week.
Students also have an opportunity to participate in research programs at various national laboratories and universities.
Peer Tutoring: Students may participate in Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs). Under the tutelage of senior level students or graduate students, students meet once a week or more often to work on additional homework problems and practice exams. The AEWs help students master their coursework in the introductory core science courses.
Academic Stipends: Stipends will be awarded to students at the following levels:
LAMP Scholars (freshman, sophomore) - $550 per year
LAMP Scholars - Operation Juniors - $250 per semester
LAMP Scholars - Operation Seniors - $600 per year
GRE Preparation: Graduate Records Examination (GRE) workshops are available for students free of charge. The workshops are designed to prepare students for the actual administered GRE exams. The workshops are month-long, university faculty conducted, and include comprehensive reviews which use actual released tests exclusively. The workshops are conducted by Test Review Institute and are held on Tulane campus.
Group Enrollment: A cohort of science, engineering, and mathematics majors will be able to enroll in the same course section, assigned to study groups, and provided peer tutors. By participating in the group enrollment, students are able to master their coursework in the introductory core science courses, earn the strong grades necessary to excel in the science, engineering, and mathematics curriculums, and overcome the sense of ethnic isolation that many minority students experience in the large lecture settings. Furthermore, the group enrollment provides a natural opportunity for students to network together and form study groups. The group enrollment and Academic Excellence Workshops will afford minority students the ability to maximize their learning potential by solidifying the knowledge they acquired in the courses. Your academic advisor and LS-LAMP staff will work together to enroll students in these courses.
Graduate School Preparation: Students are provided with information and attend seminars on applying to graduate school, how to finance graduate education, admission requirements, etc.
Travel/Research Grants: Through the LS-LAMP Management Office, students may apply for small travel/research grants to attend conferences, present papers, visit a graduate school, attend GRE preparation workshops, and conduct a research project in conjunction with a faculty mentor. Science, engineering, and mathematics students can receive up to $700. Faculty may also apply for the travel/research grants.
Scientific Conferences: Students have an opportunity to attend and present at various scientific conferences.
