Virginia Calls for a Peace Convention

Acting upon a suggestion by Governor John Letcher, who rebuked both northern and southern extremists, the Virginia General Assembly invited the states to send representatives to a peace convention to meet in Washington, D.C., on February 4. It was intended to explore ways of averting war, and its chosen day of assembling was selected to coincide with the convening of the secessionist states at Montgomery, Alabama.
