- Introduction:
This document describes how to retrieve specific records once you have performed a search
in Voyager or have imported a record.
(For searching itself, see "Searching in the Voyager Cataloging Module";
for importing, see "Importing and Overlaying Records from OCLC into
Voyager.")
- Lists: Your search results will usually take the form of a list in a dialogue
box. Examples include:
- Headings list
- Titles index
- Imported records list
- Holdings records list
- Item records list
The Voyager system provides different methods, including various shortcuts, for calling up one
or more records from entries displayed in these lists. For more information, see:
"Retrieving an entry (record or heading) from a list" and
"Retrieving multiple entries (records or headings)."
For information on how to move from one of multiple selected records to another, see
"Toggling between records."
- Associated records: The Voyager cataloging module is structured so that associated bib,
holdings, and item records are linked. Once you have retrieved a specific bib, holdings, or
item record, you can retrieve its associated records. For more information, see:
"Retrieving asociated records (bib, holdings, and item)" and
"Toggling between records."
- Returning to lists: After you have checked a record or records from a particular list,
you may want to return to the list to select other records. For information on how to do so,
see: "Retrieving additional records from a list."

- Retrieving associated records (bib, holdings, and item):
Related Voyager bib, holdings, and item records are linked together and can be retrieved from
each other, sometimes in more than one way. If the records are already opened, you may be
able to toggle between them. The following methods should work,
whether or not the records are already open:
- Displaying hierarchy: To display the hierarchy illustrating linked records:
- Use the macro function key combination Control-F2
- or
- Use the keyboard sequence: Alt-R
W
- or
- Click on the "Show associated records" icon towards the top, the second icon from the right
- or
- Open the Record menu and click on "Show associated records"
Once you have displayed the hierarchy tree: Click on the plus (+) signs to the left to
expand the display. To retrieve a specific
record, either:
- Use the keyboard sequences:
- Select next line down: Down arrow, Space bar
- Select next line up: Up arrow, Space bar
- then
- Retrieve highlighted record(s): Alt-R
- or
- Click on the line with its details to highlight it, then click "Retrieve"
(double-clicking does not work here)
To close the hierarchy display:
- Use the keyboard sequence: Alt-C
- or
- Click on the "Close" button
- Retrieving holdings records: Alternatives:
- From bib record: The macro on F5 retrieves associated holdings records from a bib record.
- From item record: The keyboard sequence to retrieve a holdings record from an item record:
- Alt-R
- G
- From bib or item record: Open the Record menu and click on "Retrieve holdings."
- Retrieving item records: Alternatives:
- The macro on F7 retrieves associated item records from either a bib or a holdings record.
- Open the Record menu and click on "Retrieve items."
- Any item record with a barcode number can be
retrieved by barcode number.
- Retrieving bib records: [So far, the only way reported to retrieve an unopened
bib record from a holdings or item record is by displaying the hierarchy.]
