Writing Voyager bib record number | Barcoding |
Writing call number | Stickups, etc. |
For additional information on handling items in different locations, see also:
For additional information on the physical handling of serials, see also:
These instructions apply to:
The Voyager bib record number should be put in items or on stickups as indicated below. If the number goes on the item, do not write it on the stickup (so that we only write it once).
It should be preceded by the prefix "B" or "b" -- e.g., B1789457.
Categories:
The Voyager number should be towards the bottom of the t.p. verso.
The call number should generally only be written in as cataloguing the piece is completed. Its format should be based on the call number format in the MARC holdings record. Wherever there is a space or a $i subfield code, the call number should drop down a line.
If a particular location notation is indicated in the "Notation on item" column in "Treatment of Items and Information in Voyager Item Records, by Location," add it to the bottom of the call number.
For copy 2 and higher, the copy should be noted just below the call number proper, above any location notation. It should be written: "cop.<number>" -- with no space following the period.
The call number should be written on the t.p. verso, towards the upper-left-hand corner if
possible. Some space should be left in the margins for future trimming or binding.
The numerical designation should not be included except in ambiguous cases, such as "2nd ser." When applicable, a location designation should be added below the number.
The number should include either the numerical designation or the date. If you have more than one option -- volume number or edition statement and date -- generally choose the following, though exceptions may occur:
If a date spans more than a year, include both, separated by a slash (/); omit the first two digits of the second year when they match the first two digits of the first.
When applicable, a location designation should be added below the number.
To check whether barcodes should be put on materials for a given location, check the "Barcode" column in "Treatment of Items and Information in Voyager Item Records, by Location."
For details on barcoding when appropriate, see "Voyager Item Records:  Barcodes."
Otherwise, they can be removed from books upon cataloguing.
Please note: If you leave a stickup in a piece that has a title page in an unusual place, such as following several leaves of illustrations: Please place the stickup behind the title page leaf, to help the Processing students find the t.p. verso.
Book jacket: Retain, slipped inside the book, for all locations except regular HT Stacks. Jackets from stacks books may be disposed of.
