1. Places of publication and publishers:

   • Basic rule: You do not need to change the place of publication or publisher name that appears in the record -- even if it does not match the place or publisher name in your piece -- unless:
     • You suspect an error

       or

     • The information in the record may be misleading

       or

     • An added entry for a missing publisher is required.

     E.g.    T.p.:    Verso

     T.p. verso:  Verso Books is an imprint of New Left Books.

     260    London : $b New Left Books

     This field does not need to be edited.

   • Missing $b:  If the 260 $b subfield is lacking because the corporate body publisher is present in an older record as a main entry, the publisher should be added.  (Cf. Part I.C.3, on matching when publishers are missing.)

   • Additional publishers:  (Cf. Part I.C.2, on matching when multiple publishers are involved.)
     • A second or subsequent publisher present in the piece but not in the record should be added only if you need to provide an added entry for it.

       E.g.    T.p.:    Clarendon Press

       T.p. verso:  Oxford University Press

       260    Oxford : $b Clarendon Press, $c ...

       "Oxford University Press" does not need to be added.

       E.g.    T.p.:    Doolittle Press      Guernsey

                  Falkland Islands Antique Tricycle Association      Stanley

       260    Guernsey : $b Doolittle Press, $c ...

       Since the Falkland Islands Antique Tricycle Association appears to have contributed significantly to the content of this work, you want to add a 710 added entry for this association.   You have no evidence of any other printings of this rather esoteric work and suspect, based on the content, that this association would appear on the title page of any other edition.

       The 260 should be edited to read:

       260 Guernsey : $b Doolittle Press ; $a Stanley : $b Falkland Islands Antique Tricycle Association, $c ...

       (No brackets are needed, since there is probably no variant without "Falkland Islands Antique Tricycle Association.")

     • A second or subsequent publisher present in the record but not in the piece should be left in the record, bracketed.

       E.g.    T.p.:    Meirioneth -- Gavin Publications

       No other publisher or distributor is listed in the piece.

       260    Meirioneth [Wales] : $b Gavin Publications ; $a Lynton, Devon : $b Across the Waters Books, $c ...

       The 260 should be edited to read:

       260 Meirioneth [Wales] : $b Gavin Publications ; $a [Lynton, Devon : $b Across the Waters Books], $c ...

   • Distributors:  Distributor information present in the record should match the information in your piece; delete it if it does not match.  If present only in the piece, it does not need to be added to the record.

2. Dates:

   • Basic rule:  If the dates in the record and the piece match and are correct, do not edit the 260 $c subfield.  Do not worry about whether the date in the record is represented with or without the copyright symbol "c" or brackets (cf. Part I.D.4, on the nature vs the appearance of dates) or whether a copyright date is present in the record following the publication date (cf. Part I.D.3, section on matching based on publication plus copyright date).

     E.g.    T.p. verso:    First Canadian edition 1992

     260    $c c1992.

     The 260 $c should not be edited.

     E.g.    T.p. verso:    New and expanded edition 1954

     260    $c [1954]

     The 260 $c should not be edited.

     E.g.    T.p. verso:    First American edition 1988 ... c1986

     260    $c 1988

     The 260 $c should not be edited.  (If the record had 260 $c 1988, c1986, it would also not need to be edited.)

   • Printing dates:
     • If you are certain that a date in the record is just a printing date -- whether it appears in a 260 $c or 260 $g subfield -- you may change it or delete it.  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on t.p. date, Part I.D.2, section on matching based on printing date when no other dates are provided, and Part I.D.3, section on matching based on printing date accompanying publication or copyright date.)  The 260 field, fixed field, and call number dates should be consistent.  If the date is changed, the date that you use should be bracketed unless it is explicitly in the piece as a publication date.

       E.g.    T.p.:    1965

       T.p. verso:    Copyright 1952; Reprinted 1958, 1962, 1965

       No record was found for the 1952 edition.  The only matching record has 260    $c 1965, c1952.

       The 1965 date is clearly simply a printing date; it should be deleted from the record.

       E.g.    T.p. verso:    Third edition 1977 ... 10th printing 1984

       260    $c 1977 $g (1984 printing)

       The $g subfield should be deleted from this record.

       E.g.    T.p. verso:    segunda reimpresión 1975

       Colophon:    Depósito legal 1974

       260    $c [1975]

       The date should be changed to [1974], bracketed because it is an inferred publication date.

       E.g.    T.p. verso:    2a edizione, riveduta    1988

                           Ristampa [reprint]    1990

       260    $c 1990

       The date should be changed to 1988, unbracketed because it is present in the piece as a publication date.

     • On the other hand, if you are not certain whether a date in a record represents a printing date or an actual date of publication -- or if you do not know the actual date of publication -- it is safer not to change it.  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on t.p. date, and Part I.D.2, section on matching based on printing date when no other dates are provided.)

       E.g.    T.p. verso:    1a edizione    1982

                           2a edizione    1986

       260    $c 1986

       You are using the 1986 record because there is no matching 1982 record.

       The 1986 date should not be changed.  Without more evidence that the 1982 edition was identical to yours, it would be risky to change the record date to 1982.

     • Dates that are presented as printing dates but that actually represent publication dates, due to their being combined with other distinctive elements (differences between a record with an earlier date and the piece), should be included in your record.  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on printing date when no other dates are provided.)

       If the date is already present in the record in the 260 $c subfield, you may accept the way in which this date is presented, whether it is accompanied by the term "printing" or it is bracketed. If you need to alter a variant "printing" date in your record, you may follow the way in which the date is presented in the record (i.e., continue to bracket or to use the term "printing").

       If the date is already present in the record in the 260 $g subfield, the date should be moved to the 260 $c subfield and bracketed.  The 260 $g subfield should be deleted.  The 260 field, fixed field, and call number dates should be consistent.  NB:  This procedure reflects an in-house policy that deliberately does not correspond to the current LC rule interpretation (LCRI 1.4F6 3) dealing with printing dates in original records.

       E.g.    T.p. verso:    c1922

       Colophon:    Ristampa anastatica    1978

       This reprint has been issued by a different publisher from that of the 1922 edition.

       260    $c 1978 printing, c1922.

       The 260 $c does not need to be edited.

       The record with bracketed 1982 appears to be for an unaltered later printing of the 1980 edition.

       The 260 $c should be edited to read:  [1980], c1976.

       260    $c c1956 $g (1989 printing)

       The 260 $c subfield should be edited to read:

               [1989], c1956.

       The $g subfield should be deleted.

   • Dépôt légal/depósito legal dates:  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on dépôt légal date.)
     • If a dépôt légal date is the only date in the piece, you may use it in the record, in brackets, as an inferred date of publication.  If it appears as "D.L. [code]" in the record, you may leave it.

     • If the only date in the piece other than a dépôt légal date is one that you have determined is a simple printing date, you should delete the printing date from the record (if present) and instead use the dépôt légal date, in brackets, as an inferred date of publication.

     • If a dépôt légal date appears in the piece in addition to other significant (publication or copyright) dates, the dépôt légal date should be disregarded in the record.

   • Copyright renewal dates: (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on copyright renewal date.)
     • Books:  If you need to use a books-format record with a copyright renewal date (because no matching record with the original copyright date is available), the copyright renewal date should be left in the record.

     • Scores:  Consult the Music Cataloguer.

   • Copyright dates for parts of an item:  If you need to use a record with a later copyright date for part of an item (because no matching record with the original copyright date is available), the later copyright date should be left in the record.  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on copyright date for part of an item.)

   • Errors:  If you know that the record date is inaccurate, add the correct dates in brackets, with "i.e." (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on corrected date.)

     An exception:  CIP dates may be corrected without use of brackets or "i.e."  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on CIP date.)

     E.g.:   T.p.:    1983

     T.p. verso:    First printing    1984

     The record has 260    $c 1983

     The 260 should be edited to read:  $c 1983 [i.e. 1984]

     If the corrected date of publication is present in the record, but a title page date that might be interpreted as the publication date is not present, add it but indicate the correct date, as well.

     E.g.:   T.p.:    1983

     T.p. verso:    First printing    1984

     The record has 260    $c [1984]

     The 260 should be edited to read:  $c 1983 [i.e. 1984]

     If the record already contains a bracketed date following "i.e.," you should leave this date in the record unless you can determine that the date is incorrect.  If the date is incorrect, it should be changed or deleted.

     E.g.    T.p.:    1976

     T.p. verso:    c1976

     Colophon:    Depósito legal    1977

     260    $c 1976 [i.e. 1977]

     Since the depósito legal date is not significant, it should not be used as a corrected date and should be deleted from the record.

   • Missing dates:  (Cf. Part I.D.2, section on matching based on missing date.)
     • If a date is present in the record but missing from the piece, it should be accepted unless it appears erroneous.  It should be bracketed if it is not already in brackets.  You may, optionally, add a question mark ("?") after the date.

     • If a date is present in the piece but missing from the record (i.e., 260 $c [n.d.]), it should be added, in brackets.

     • If a date is missing from both the record and the piece:  If you can easily determine the correct date or correct approximate date of publication, add it to the record, in brackets and in the appropriate form (e.g., $c [1938]; $c [187-?]).  Otherwise, leave "260 $c [n.d.]" in the record.

   The 260 field, fixed field, and call number dates should be consistent.
