             Answers to Typical Questions
  • The purpose of this clinic is to stimulate the participants to continue thinking about and exploring kata applications.
  • The clinic fee is $25;  $10 for full-time students (high-school or college/university).
  • All proceeds go to the travel budget of the Tulane Karate Club.
  • There is no extra fee for entering the facility and parking is free.
  • For directions to the venue click here
  • The clinic lasts 2-2½ hours with a couple of short breaks.
  • Practice is on a soft mat.
  • Kyriakos Papadopoulos teaches how to apply the kata moves at all ranges of engagement, especially at very close fighting distance, most of the times exactly as they are performed in Shotokan kata.  Also a 4th-Dan in Judo [United States Judo Federation], Kyriakos has developed the format of this clinic by drawing from various available sources and his own practice of other martial arts.
  • Besides blocks, punches, strikes and kicks, the clinic also includes practice of falling, throws, joint locks, chokes, weak and vital points.
  • Advanced ranks are obviously more successful in assimilating the techniques.  However, even when one doesn’t  know a certain kata, they can still practice/learn the application taught (at some elementary level).
  • Vital points are demonstrated, but NOT practiced on a partner (in a few instances you may be asked to pressure-point yourselves);  weak (non-vital) points are used by mutually agreeable partners.
  • Partners choose each other, more-or-less from the same gender, rank, built,  age, etc, and you may change partners, if you wish to, during the training or at water breaks.
  • The intensity of throwing, joint-locking and choking, is mutually agreed by each two partners.
  • The aerobic intensity of the clinic is quite below your typical karate class, but the clinic is almost 2½ hours long, therefore do expect a workout.
  • Open to active (regularly training) members of a JKA club, brown belt or above (purple with permission), and 16 years or older.
  • audience (non-training spectators) is also limited to the previous group, or through permission of the TKC instructor.
