Study Abroad for Classics students
Undergraduate opportunities
Students majoring in Classical Studies, Greek, or Latin have the opportunity of studying abroad, usually during the junior year, for either a semester or even a full year. Tulane-approved programs for undergraduate majors include:
College Year in Athens (Greece) – CYA offers both semester and year-long programs. The College Year program enrolls about 170 students each year. The program offers a series of apartments for housing students in small groups. See their website for information on courses and application materials and deadlines.
Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (Rome, Italy)– The ICCS program in Rome offers a semester-long curriculum focused on Classical Studies centered on the Ancient City course. ICCS groups are small, no more than 36 per semester in each program. Information and applications for the program are available on the ICCS website.
Other options (Australia, Denmark, New Zealand, and the UK), as well as summer-only programs, also exist, including:
• Summer Session at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (Contact Prof. Ryan Boehm)
• Classical Summer School at the American Academy in Rome (Contact Prof. Susann Lusnia)
Students interested in studying abroad are advised to speak to their major advisor and to visit the TULANE OFFICE OF STUDY ABROAD in the Center for International Studies for guidance and application information. You must apply for and receive approval from Tulane before studying abroad. The Study Abroad advisors can assist you with this process.
Graduate students are strongly encouraged to become members of APA, AIA, and/or CAMWS, as these professional organizations offer scholarships to graduate students for travel and research. Discounted membership rates are available to students.
Here at Tulane graduate students have several opportunities for studying overseas:
• Freie Universität in Berlin Exchange Scholarship
Students in our M.A. program may apply to spend a year studying at the Freie Universität in Berlin. The School of Liberal Arts may send two eligible graduate students per year. The students are selected by application to the School of Liberal Arts. For more information contact the department's Graduate Advisor.
• American School of Classical Studies in Athens
The American School in Athens offers both Academic, or 'Regular' Year, and Summer programs. Graduate students interested in studying at the American School should speak with Prof. Ryan Boehm, the department's ASCSA representative.
• American Academy in Rome
The American Academy offers a 6-week long summer program (and occasionally other seminars) for which graduate students may apply. The primary program is the Classical Summer School. Students interested in the American Academy's programs should contact Dr. Susann Lusnia, the department's AAR representative.
Fieldwork Opportunities
Undergraduate and graduate students in Classical Studies who are interested in working on an excavation in the summer are encouraged to look at the online version of the Fieldwork Opportunities Bulletin published by the Archaeological Institute of America.
All students should consult with faculty in the department before applying to field schools, excavations, or summer study-travel programs.
