The Department of Classical Studies allows students to design major and minor programs of study with broad exposure or more focused concentration in the fields of language and literature, art and archaeology, and ancient history.
Students interested in teaching can earn certification in Latin through the Teacher Preparation and Certification Program.
Students interested in pursuing graduate study in Classics should consult with their departmental adviser about the undergraduate preparation needed for graduate school. (For information on the 4+1 M.A. program in Classics, see our Graduate Program page.
Classical Studies (CLAS) 30* credits in GREK, LATN, and/or CLAS courses
• at least 9 credits of which must be at the 4000 level
Latin (LATN) 30* credits in GREK, LATN, and/or CLAS courses
• at least 15 credits must be in Latin
• at least 6 credits must be at the 4000 level
• no more than 6 credits in LATN at the 3000 level
Greek (GREK) 30* credits in GREK, LATN, and/or CLAS courses
• at least 15 credits must be in Greek
• at least 6 credits must be at the the 4000 level
• no more than 6 credits in GREK at the 3000 level
*(27 credits, if the student has multiple majors)
Classical Studies (CLAS): 15 credits in GREK, LATN, and/or CLAS courses
• at least 9 credits must be at or above the 3000 level
• at least 3 credits of those must be at the 4000 level
Latin (LATN): 15 credits in GREK, LATN, and/or CLAS courses
• at least 9 credits in LATN must be at or above the 3000 level
• at least 3 credits of those must be at the 4000 level
Greek (GREK): 15 credits in GREK LATN, and/or CLAS courses
• at least 9 credits in GREK must be at or above the 3000 level
• at least 3 credits of those must be at the 4000 level
Multiple Majors: Students with more than one major are required to complete only 27 credits for the major in our department.
Language Requirement: Greek or Latin courses may be used to satisfy the foreign language requirement. However, courses used to satisfy the language requirement cannot also be counted toward the major or minor.

Each year the department recognized outstanding senior majors. In addition to Departmental Honors and Senior Scholar recognitions for those completing work in the Honors Program of the university, the department awards the following senior prizes:
• The Judah Touro Medal, established in 1856, is one of the oldest academic prizes at Tulane University. It is awarded for excellence in the study of ancient history, Greek, Hebrew, or Latin.
• The George H. Terriberry Prize, was first awarded in 1924 and is named for a distinguished alumnus of Tulane University. This prize is awarded to an outstanding senior in the department.
• The Classical Studies Prize awarded for excellence in Latin, Greek, or the study of ancient history, culture or archaeology.
