Prof. Dennis Kehoe Travels to Pavia to Participate in CEDANT
The prestigious Centro di studi e ricerche sui Diritti Antichi (CEDANT) of the Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori of Pavia, Italy invited Dennis P. Kehoe, Professor in the Department of Classical Studies and associate faculty member in the Tulane School of Law, to its annual seminar on Roman Law. The acronym of the Centro recalls Cicero's famous epigram, "arma cedant togae." CEDANT is designed to introduce graduate students and post-docs to the scholarly study of Roman law, with a focus on current debates in the field.
In this seminar, which lasts about three weeks, leading international experts make presentations to a group of doctoral students and post-docs who are chosen on a competitive basis. A distinctive feature of the CEDANT seminar is for the students/ post-docs to develop individual research projects, under the guidance of the presenters. The borsisti, as they are called, came from Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Russia, Rumania, Bulgaria, and the US.
The topic of this year's seminar was "Roman Law and Economy: Two Ways of Conceiving the World (in the first three centuries of the Empire)." Kehoe’s presentation on January 21 was entitled: "Managing someone else’s property: legal responsibility, control by magistrates and economic choices." He was also "tutor" to three post-doctoral research projects. In the first week of September, he returned to Pavia with the other presenters to hear the papers written by the borsisti and to determine which ones were suitable for publication. The seminar also involves the publication of the papers by the tutors themselves; Kehoe’s contribution will concern the Roman law on the management of property belonging to orphans by their guardians.
